people never critique the parts of fairy tales that are worth criticizing like the beauty equals goodness trope or bad fathers never being as punished as bad mothers
they just want to spit on the idea of happy endings and how unrealistic they are because how dare we tell stories about abused children that escape their abusers and move on to happier lives. how dare we tell stories about suffering women who make the best of their circumstances and never lose their true selves. how dare we tell stories about people who love each other so much they’ll go on impossible journeys to get impossible objects to break each other’s curses. how dare we tell stories about the girl who outsmarted the cannibal or walked through the snow to save her best friend.
none of those things are ~grimdark~
stories that are intended to give hope aren’t ~gritty~ enough
why defeat the dragon or befriend the dragon when you could let yourself be eaten by it
that’s more ~realistic~
You put yourself right between the killing thing’s teeth, but you don’t give it the power to—
This is the best one so far!
there is literally no difference between academic scholars discussing their interpretations of a text and a bunch of people yelling YOUR HEADCANON IS WRONG at each other
As a Masters student I can vouch for this. The difference is citations.
